Former Bradford City and Tottenham manager Buck Hysen last night
accepted a two year deal from the SAS to manage England with immediate
effect. Hysen was apparently chosen from a shortlist of five managers,
Which included Terry Venables, Martin O'Neill, Roy Hodgson and
Arsene Wenger.
Hysen replaces Alain Borl who resigned only last week. It is
believed that the SAS wanted to make a quick decision to give
Hysen time to settle into the job and continue to build on Alain
Borl's success. Despite Borl's short reign, He managed to restore
some much needed pride to the England side and ended his brief
spell with an impressive 4-0 win over Australia. The SAS have
decided to stick with this formula for success by appointing another
ex SAS manager.
Hysen has had his fair share of success over the past two seasons,
He built Bradford into a winning machine in season one and ended
the season on a high by gaining promotion to the first division
and picking up the SAS cup after a 2-0 win against Everton. Although
Bradford have found it more difficult this season Hysen still
kept them in contention for the league and guided them to the
group stages of the SAS cup.
The SAS obviously feel that Hysen is the right man for the job
and will be hoping that he can once again make England a dominant
force in international football.
Hysen's appointment will also give renewed hope to players who
lost their place in the England set up under Borl. Gasgoigne,
Who has been a revelation since his move to Bradford, Will be
hopeful of a return to the England set up under the manager that
brought him to Bradford and helped resurrect his career. Players
like Michael Bridges, Greame Le Saux, Robbie Fowler and Gary Neville
will also be hopeful of a return.
As yet England have no friendlies booked but the SAS board are
believed to be talking to several nations about this and are hoping
to arrange a fixture within the next month. The SAS are also keen
to reinstate the home international clash against old enemies
Scotland. It's been almost 15 years since the annual fixture was
scraped but with the backing of the new SAS board and SAS managers
this could become a reality again.
In the meantime Hysen will have time to settle into his new
role before having to prove to the nation that he is indeed the
right man for the job. He's already proved he can win things at
club level, Now can he go on to capture the hearts of a nation
desperate for English success.
